Sue Smith
I have been drawing since the age of four, although it was then mostly Popeye and Mickey Mouse.
During my early twenties I began to sell extremely individual and colourful paintings, mostly executed in inks, but also including some striking pencil portraits. I exhibited widely during this time and became a sought-after artist in the burgeoning fantasy field, with my work appearing in several magazines and running art exhibitions at the big Science Fiction Conventions.
For a considerable time my painting took a back seat as I brought up two children.; however even then I began to specialise in children’s portraits and had many commissions.
2004 saw a new and late flourish, producing very different pictures of buildings and rocks in the landscape, which then evolved into complex and intricate paintings of trees, water and the natural world. The emphasis was on the contrast between textures, colour and light with the paintings executed in a variety of media, including acrylics, pen and ink and pastel. I have begun exhibiting again and have gained some new fans. In 2007 I was runner-up in The Artist magazine annual art competition and in 2008 exhibited in the Three Counties Open at Keele University.
