Enamelling
Maureen Carswell is an artist enameller living in Shrewsbury. Enamelling is the art of fusing glass to metal, an art which goes back three thousand years. Maureen however, works in a totally contemporary technique of her own devising. She starts with a flat sheet of very thin copper, this she scores and shapes into vessels and sculptural forms. She uses the same technique to make pieces of jewellery. Then follows the process of applying the enamel to the three-dimensional forms, with a succession of applications and firings at a temperature of 900°C.
Each piece is unique, having been individually made by hand.
She has exhibited widely, one of her bowls receiving commendation at an exhibition in the Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo. Most recently she was invited to exhibit at three venues in Finland, the third being the National Museum of Craft and Costume.
her work is represented in many permanent collections, including the Enamelist Society, USA, the International Enamel Workshop, Kecskemet, Hungary and the Moscow Museum of Decorative Arts.
