Frances Carlile
Sculpture and Print
My work is concerned with notions of quietness, solitude. The sculpture is often connected with the landscape, either made for a specific place or containing elements of the landscape itself. Sometimes these elements are transformed and located and fixed through casting. I think of landscape as an enclosure, where there are traces or memories of people and events. It could also be seen as an arena or stage, where something is about to happen.
My printmaking practice has enabled me to develop the narrative strand running through the work. I use the idea of imaginary fairytales as a way of exploring narrative space. The techniques of sculpture and printmaking can influence each other and even become part of the same work.
I work in series with one piece leading on to the next. Stills from a fairytale is an ongoing series of small format prints which can stand alone or form part of a larger group.
